Roof Ladder and Peak Handrail Kits: Supporting Safer Roof Access
Grain bin roofs are hazardous zones without proper guardrails and climbing support. Greene Stairs’ Easy Step Roof Ladder Handrail and Peak Handrail Kits offer a robust solution to reduce the risk of falls and improve mobility across steep roof pitches. This post explains the system in detail so facility managers and installers can make informed decisions.
Peak Handrail Kit Overview
The Easy Step Peak Handrail System is available in four primary sizes. Each section is designed to match the outer diameter of the bin:
- 7-section kit: approx. 7′ diameter
- 9-section kit: approx. 9′ diameter
- 10-section kit: approx. 10′ diameter
- 13-section kit: approx. 13′ diameter
These modular kits are built on a segmented mounting ring that bolts directly to the roof rib tops. This key innovation eliminates roof rib interference and ensures consistent spacing for handrail posts. Posts bolt into the ring, forming a continuous, circular handrail system.
Each handrail is 1.5″ round with formed, flattened connections that feature built-in drain holes to weep moisture and prevent corrosion inside the tubing.
Important Notes When Ordering
- Each system includes one entry section for connecting to a roof ladder or roof stair system.
- Additional entries can be added to support multiple roof access points.
- Sizing should ideally allow the user to stand on existing roof rungs near the peak.

If no peak handrail is used, it’s advised to upsize the roof stair or ladder handrail system to compensate for reduced protection at the top.
Roof Ladder Handrail Kit Overview
This upgraded system mounts directly to the top of the roof rib using factory pre-punched holes. Each handrail post replaces a roof rung at its location:
- Two-rung modules mount on every other rung location
- Three-rung modules mount on every third rung location
The design includes braces at the top of each run to prevent scissoring motion and stabilize the climb. Greene’s layout typically uses three-rung sections with a two-rung module at the bottom for ideal climbing balance.
For smoother transitions at the top, connect your roof ladder handrail to a Peak Handrail System.
Connection and Mounting Features
The handrail uses a 1.5″ round tube connected with a vinyl-coated handrail clamp. Vertical stanchions mount to roof ribs and include gussets that:
- Improve structural stability
- Allow slight height adjustments (helpful on multi-stage roofs)
The top rail height is approximately 37.5″ above the roof rib, creating a protected climbing corridor from bottom to top.
System Safety and Package Considerations
When used together, the roof ladder and peak handrail kits:
- Significantly reduce fall risk
- Improve user confidence and comfort while climbing
- Provide a 24″ wide guarded walkway
The ES61100 package is the default size for ladder handrails. If you change the peak handrail size, it may impact the appropriate ladder handrail package. In general:
- No peak handrail? Size ladder handrail up to the next larger bin size
- Using a larger peak handrail? You may be able to size the ladder package down to the next smaller bin
Final Thoughts
